Guided Response 12

Discuss your ideas about the main character. Is the character worthy of praise or criticism? Why?

My Opinion about Jack who is the main character and the novel Room by Emma Donoghue. I think His ma needs to have  a younger sibling for him so he can have someone to play with and watch television with so he won’t have to do those two things by himself anymore.  Jack needs to go out to see how the real world is  because certain things he watches on television is unreal. Alot of things he say in the novel is very awkward in funny at times it seems to me that he doesn't know if certain things are real or fake.  I think he watches too much television and the room because certain things he says ive year olds don’t suppose to say. Also, his ma needs to put him into a school  close by Old Nick house so he can get an education because he seems very smart to be only five years old. As I was reading, his ma had to correct him from saying a couple of things most of the time  because he said it the wrong way but that’s what parents are for to help out so ma tells him how to say it correctly. When he gets into school I’m sure he will have much better speaking skills and grammar skills as he reach higher grade levels. Jack is criticism because the description the authors choose for Jack is very annoying because I know most five year olds don’t talk the way author said they do.  Example, most five year olds do have smart mouths such as talking back to there parents.

  1. Do you think children pick up speech patterns based on their social situations...school, daycare, etc? Maybe that's why Jack's speech was so different. The only exposure he had to the "outside world" was 30 minutes of TV a day.
